Race, Ethnicity & Language

Watch the Video: Race, Ethnicity and Language (REaL) data, and why it is important to health care »

What is REaL data? It stands for Race, Ethnicity and Language. The Greater Detroit Area Health Council has put together a great video explaining the nationwide implications of REaL data on health care.

Questions about race and ethnicity can give providers a better idea of what health conditions someone might be at risk for, improve preventative care, and often lead to better health outcomes for the patient. When patients are given information related to their health in their preferred language they are more likely to understand how to care for their condition and avoid readmission to the hospital or one of our clinics.

REaL questions are about more than data, they are about improving quality of care and meeting the needs of each patient as an individual-which is the right thing to do to achieve health equity.

Communication with Non-Verbal Patients: Each department should have laminated cards containing visual cues for communicating with non-verbal patients and visitors. Language Access has provided the nurse’s station in each department with the cards. Please contact Language Access with questions: 575-8274 or languageaccess@yvmh.org
