Palliative Care Services

Palliative care is both a philosophy of care and an organized, highly structured system for delivering care. The goal of palliative care is to relieve suffering and improve the quality of life for patients with a life-threatening illness and their families.

Palliative care expands traditional disease-model medical treatments to include the goals of enhancing the quality of life for patients and family members, helping with decision-making and providing opportunities for personal growth. Palliative care can be provided along with life-prolonging treatment or as the main focus of care. Such care is Lotsa Helping Handsappropriate to those suffering from cancer, heart conditions, liver failure, renal failure, Alzheimer’s disease, spinal cord injuries and a number of other conditions.

Memorial’s palliative care program provides a multidisciplinary Palliative Care Team made up of physicians, nurses, social workers and chaplains to consult with patients and their families to develop an individualized plan of care.
