Community Education

Memorial offers classes and courses on many diseases and medical challenges that are faced by our community. Many of these courses and events are free or have a nominal cost.

In addition to these classes, Memorial also hosts events throughout the year that are open to the entire community.

Childbirth Classes Online!

Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital is proud to announce a new online childbirth class. It is the perfect alternative for those who cannot attend a conventional childbirth class.

The program is web-based and divided into 8 convenient lessons covering the key topics relating to childbirth. Each class is interactive and includes illustrations, videos and games that you can enjoy at your convenience.

Cancer
North Star Lodge offers support groups and classes, like the Young Adult Cancer Support Class to give people to tools to manage their busy lives along with their cancer. Visit www.northstarlodge.org for more information

Children
Children's Village is dedicated to the needs of children with special needs and their families. In additional special events that include activities for the whole family, and support groups for parents, Children's Village provides ongoing classes designed to bring greater support and understanding to all families.

Passport to Health, offered through schools in the Yakima Valley, is provided through Memorial's Community Education. In addition to classroom activities, our educators are available to events around town. Passport to health gives children and families a good foundation for healthy living and makes education fun.

Diabetes
Early screening and prevention can help patients prevent the onset of diabetes. Our pre-diabetes and diabetes classes give patients the tools they need to stabilize blood sugar and manage symptoms. Most of our classes are covered in full or in part by insurance, Medicare and Medicaid.

En Español
To meet the needs of our culturally diverse valley, Memorial publishes a part of the Web site and the quarterly calendar in Spanish. We also partner with local Spanish newspapers to provide interesting and informative articles on topics readers care about.

Lung impairment
Memorial's Better Breathers Clinic helps patients suffering with COPD and other lung-related diseases to get the most out of life. Providing information and support, lung impairment doesn't have to stop you from living. If you are interested in joining this class, call 575-8110.

Pregnancy/childbirth

A child changes your life forever, in ways you can't imagine until s/he arrives. Memorial offers a selection of pregancy and childbirth classes and support. We'll help you get ready for this important life transition.

Successful Breastfeeding

Successful breastfeeding is a lot easier with some guidance, support and mentoring from someone who's been there and can help explain what to expect.

Pageants
High schools around Yakima Valley participate in fun and creative ways to raise awareness and money to support programs for children in need each spring as part of the YouthWorks High School Boys' Pageants. To date, they have raised more than $450,000 for The Memorial Foundation, Memorial's Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit and Children's Village. In addition to raising money, these young philanthropists experience how it feels to make a real difference in the lives of surrounding Yakima Valley children.

Caregivers
Caregivers receive emotional and educational support at Memorial. Whether your loved one is on hospice, home health, or recovering from surgery or a serious illness, classes and support groups are designed to give you the tools you need to maintain your physical and emotional health while you take care of them.

Seniors
The annual six-week Coming of Age series is just one way Memorial reach out to our healthy, vibrant seniors that together enrich Yakima with wisdom and experience. Today's seniors are healthier and living longer. Memorial Third Age celebrates the accomplishments of seniors. Membership is free and includes free and discounted offers seniors can enjoy at Memorial.

STARS (State Training & Registry System)
For those maintaining their Continuing Education Credits (CECs) Memorial offers classes on a range of topics that are relevant to your work and everyday needs.

Women's health
From our osteoporosis series, to mammogram education and screenings, to bringing in nationally known speakers, women seeking important health information can find it right here in the valley.

Memorial hosts support groups that give support and advice to those dealing with life-changing medical and psychological conditions. Family members of those affected are also encouraged to attend these free meetings.
