Anne, Certified Coding Specialist

Anne is a translator of sorts – only not of a language most people understand. Instead of translating words and phrases, Anne translates patient chart information into codes the computer understands.
As a Certified Coding Specialist, Anne’s job consists of using universal codes for statistical and billing purposes. ;Since joining Memorial’s Health Information Management department in 1980, Anne has seen a lot of changes to her industry. At one point, her workload nearly doubled. Today, she and another Certified Coding Specialist are able to each code up to 50 charts a day.
Anne continues ongoing education to further her knowledge of inpatient coding practices. “I’ve always been interested in learning as much as possible because every system has tricks and shortcuts that can increase efficiency and allow me to achieve more in less time,” says Anne. “Continuing education classes provide me with new tools and ultimately a better understanding of how I can get the most out of my day.”

Anne is a woman of many trades; one of her hobbies is refurbishing homes. “I bought a fixer-upper 30 years ago, and I’m still finding new ways to update the house,” says Anne. Anne enjoys interior design, carpentry, and refurnishing furniture. Only a few people at Memorial know about Anne’s talent for taking old fixtures and parts and creating beautiful and functional modern-looking lamps. Along with refurbishing houses, Anne gardens during spring and summer months; her husband Ken and she also enjoy kayaking. When she’s not working the soil or updating her home, friends may find Anne picking out a melody on her piano to relax.
What she Loves About Memorial
Anne considers herself a student of life. She enjoys the opportunities working at Memorial has given her to continue learning about inpatient coding, but what she really enjoys is meeting other employees in different departments. “I’ve created a great network of friends in many departments hospital-wide,” says Anne. “I love the people I work with; everyone has a great personality, which builds a good working environment.”
