Physical therapy uses physical agents such as E-stim (electrical stimulation), ultrasound, traction and heat/cold, to help improve muscular function after injury, illness or surgery. Treatment can also include therapeutic exercise, joint mobilizations and soft tissue work to improve strength and decrease pain. Physical therapy focuses primarily on the following areas:
- Neurological disorders or diseases resulting in forms of paralysis, vision impairment, poor balance, inability to ambulate, or loss of functional independence.
- Orthopedic injuries and disorders of the musculoskeletal system as well as patients recovering from orthopedic surgery or other injuries or illnesses that limit physical function.
- Geriatric therapy or issues concerning people as they go through the aging process.
- Work related injuries that limit an individual's ability to maintain full time employment
